Join UNESCO at this key event celebrating teachers around the world!

In 2023, World Teachers' Day celebrations will focus on the theme "The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reverse the teacher shortage".

The ceremony will be opened by UNESCO’s Director-General, followed by messages from the three co-convening agencies: the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International.

On the first day, distinguished speakers will deliberate on diverse strategies aimed at enhancing the prestige of the teaching profession and mitigating teacher attrition and shortage. The co-chairs of the United Nations Secretary-General High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession will present their preliminary recommendations.

Earlier that day, a panel discussion will focus on the role of teacher prizes as ways of recognition of the work undertaken by educators, and an essential form of contribution to the improvement of their status within the community.

As part of the celebrations, UNESCO will inaugurate an original photo exhibition featuring teachers from across the globe. This exhibition will showcase portraits and testimonials, recognizing their dedication, passion, and commitment to shaping the future. It will also highlight UNESCO's work on teachers. It will be on display outside UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, from late September to mid-October.

  • Consult the details and the agenda of Day 2 of the World Teachers’ Day celebrations.

Interpretation in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic will be provided. We will be adding more information on the individual events here soon..
