2nd Capacity building workshop on digital documentation of World Heritage Sites in the Arab region

In the framework of the Dive into Heritage project generously funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission and the King Saud University, UNESCO organises the 2nd training workshop on digital heritage documentationin early 2024, dates to be confirmed.

 

UNESCO launched last year the new Dive into Heritage project with the generous support of the Ministry of Culture in Saudi Arabia. Dive into Heritage will create a platform to present digital data of World Heritage sites in the Arab region and its related intangible heritage. The project underwent a reflection phase which highlighted the need to enhance capacities of Youth and regional experts in the field of digital heritage documentation. In this regard, a series of Capacity Building Workshops on Digital Documentation for World Heritage will be organised in the Arab States region.

UNESCO is collaborating with its partners in the Arab region to conduct these workshops in the format of hybrid training which will include both in presentia and online sessions. The first activity was organised fully in person in Oman between 12 and 17 March 2023.

The second training will be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in a hybrid format in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture of Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia’s Heritage Commission and the King Saud University in the framework of UNESCO’s overall Programme on Culture and Digital Technologies. This second training is open for the participation of Arab heritage professionals, site managers and students who are required to deal with digital heritage data documentation as part of their studies, research or work. 

 

The workshop aims to:

  • Equip participants with basic understanding and knowledge in the field of digital data workflows and digital documentation of cultural heritage sites.
  • Use and further improve the ongoing study developed by UNESCO on Guidelines, Criteria and Standards in the framework of the Dive into Heritage project.
    Share knowledge and expertise among heritage experts, emerging professionals, students and the team of resource persons in the field of digital heritage.
  • Contribute to the digital documentation of World Heritage sites in the Arab States region.
  • Enhance the understanding of the World Heritage system and the concept of Outstanding Universal Value.

 

Timeline (timeline for selection and potential weeks of the training)

  • Deadline to receive online applications is 03/11/2023.
  • Participants selected are informed on 08/11/2023.
  • Workshop organized between in early 2024, dates to be confirmed (including up to 2 online sessions and 6 days in Saudi Arabia, excluding travel)
