Round Table "Deconstructing racial narratives: challenging assumptions and fostering diversity"

UNESCO will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March) which will include a lecture by Evelyne Heyer, Professor of the National Museum of Natural History of France. This will be followed by a panel discussion on "Deconstructing racial narratives: challenging assumptions and fostering diversity" of international experts, such as Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; Rita Izsák-Ndiaye, expert member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, OHCHR; and Lukwago Erias, mayor of Kampala City (Uganda).
The panel seeks to understand and deconstruct the racial narratives that have proliferated in history, including during the present time. It aims to capture and explain the scientific evidence that could contribute to the dissipation of racism, racialization and discriminations.
The travelling exhibition “Us and Them – From Prejudice to Racism” will also be inaugurated at UNESCO during this event (4.30 pm - Miro Hall). The exhibition was shown at the Musée de l’Homme from March 2017 to January 2018, aims to shed light on racist behavior and prejudices, and served as an opportunity to showcase global efforts for inclusion and diversity, notably through the International Coalition of Inclusive and Sustainable Cities – ICCAR. With UNESCO Headquarters as its first stop, the exhibition is travelling in different ICCAR member cities in 2018-2019.
