Information meeting with Member States on the update of UNESCO’s human rights and anti-discrimination strategies
Event Date:

Venue:
Paris, France

UNESCO inaugurates today a process of consultation with its Member States for the purpose of reaffirming its responsibilities in the field of human rights. The process will culminate at the 40th session of the General Conference in 2019.

An Information Meeting with Member States will be held on Tuesday 3 April 2018, from 11.30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Room IX.

With the promise of ‘leaving no one behind’, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development places human rights at the centre of the UN system’s action. The commitments it contains in conjunction with the challenges to be confronted require a more coherent and comprehensive vision on the part of the Organization regarding its responsibilities in the field of human rights.

To that end, UNESCO launches the updating of the UNESCO Strategy on Human Rights and the Integrated Strategy to Combat Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, both adopted by the General Conference in 2003. Key reference points in this exercise will be the advancements realized –for example in promoting gender equality – and also the new challenges that have arisen since then – for instance the emergence of violent extremism.

The participation of Member States will be actively pursued throughout the process to garner support and build ownership of the outcome. At the same time to broaden the scoping, UNESCO will consult its key partners, such as relevant UNESCO Chairs, Category 2 Centres, academic institutions, the UN system and particularly the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
